How to Ask for a Mentorship

I spent this week preparing for my mentor meeting, practicing for my reflections speech, and writing my original work proposal. It was an extremely busy week, but at the end of the week, after completing all of my work, I felt accomplished and proud of my hard work. It was a long week, and I managed to do everything that I had planned to do.
First and foremost, the best part of this week was finally having a professional agree to be my mentor for the remainder of the school year. I compiled a few deeper level questions and asked these questions during my second meeting with this professional. In addition to learning more about my chosen topic, these questions helped to make the conversation more casual and less scripted, as I was able to draw on the professional’s responses and come up with more questions to make the meeting more conversational. This allowed me to smoothly transition to my questions about mentorships and made the whole ordeal less stressful and more smooth for both of us. I’m looking forward to setting up meetings with my mentor and getting to work.
I also worked on my research and reflections speech this week. I think I’ve made some progress overall in my speech delivery, but I still have a long way to go. I need to work on my technology issues, since I have to use two separate devices any time I have a visual presentation, and it takes a bit of time for me to get situated and ready to present. I’ll have to keep practicing on making my preparation time go smoother and faster.
My original work proposal was another huge part of my workload this week. I came up with an idea on sustainable and environmentally friendly construction and civil engineering, but before I get too much work done, I’ll have to discuss the project with my mentor and get his opinions.
One more week until winter break! I’m ready for the year 2020 to be over, and excited for what 2021 will bring me.
