This past week, I was able to meet with my mentor and discuss my final original work product. My plan has always been to write a report on various sustainable construction materials and methods, and meeting with my mentor further cemented this idea. I was able to go through the general format and structure of my report, which helped me not only finalize my product, but also allowed me to decide what topics I specifically needed to research. With the knowledge of what exactly I will be putting into my report, I can focus my research and be more efficient.
After speaking with my mentor, I know that the bulk of my report will be content that I’ve researched, but the introduction and conclusion should have more of a general view of sustainability and design philosophy. My mentor and I also discussed the importance of including a personal touch to the conclusion of my report. As a future civil engineer, what does this topic mean to me? What is my role in the civil engineering community? My conclusion will also include specific action items, like approaching government officials with ideas of updating their code with the sustainability measures I’ve outlined in my report.
I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I want to put into my report, so now it’s up to me to conduct the research and write down everything I need. I plan to stay on track with my research and mentor meetings over the next couple months, so I can create a final product that is both informative and effective in educating the public and government officials.
